Jon Nieman - Managing Director, Corporate Relations; Board Member |
Mr. Nieman is a private equity and asset management professional with three-dimensional private equity experience: as a GP, as a portfolio manager investing in PE, and as an executive with a VC-backed company. Most recently Mr. Nieman served as Managing Director of Redline Partners, LLC, an alternative investment and corporate development firm focused on emerging companies in advanced materials, advanced technology and alternative energy. At Redline Mr. Nieman had experience working with Fortune 500 companies such as Waste Management, Fujitsu, SAS and others. In addition to his investment and capital management background, Mr. Nieman has extensive experience creating strategies and building key partnerships for emerging client companies, including;
Iron Will, Inc. - a company that has launched a hand-worn device that has applications in the military and video gaming markets. Mr. Nieman helped build an advisory team to include the co-founder of Electronic Arts and the former head of product development for Motorola. He also assisted with landing of a military contract with DARPA, and facilitated engagements with companies such as HP, Logitech, DELL, Activision, and others.
Prior to joining State Street Mr. Nieman worked in various capacities with several capital management organizations, including venture funds, private equity and a government portfolio management firm;
- State Street - Private Equity Consulting (A $150 Billion Private Equity / Real Estate Group)
- State of Michigan Retirement System ($10 billion in capital committed to private equity)
- Southeast Interactive Technology Funds (A technology-focused venture capital firm)
- Owens-Illinois, Inc (Corporate pension system management)
- Mayflower Capital (Venture Funding Group)
- Harbor Capital Advisors (A $1.5 Billion Trust Group)
As with all of The University Funds management team, Mr. Nieman has successful early stage business development and M&A management experience, working on both the funding/acquisition and operations management teams of several ventures, including;
- Nortel Networks (divestiture/mergers and acquisitions projects)
- Airpath Wireless, a wi-fi startup (Raised $6.5 million in VC funding as CFO)
Mr. Nieman holds a BBA in Finance from Eastern Michigan University and an MBA from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. He has also served on the board of the Strategic Venture Association.
