The University Funds Advisory Committee is comprised of leading Research Scientists, Capital Managers, Legal Experts and Industry Executives with significant experience in IP commercialization and early-stage business development. The Managing Board of The University Funds selects members of the Advisory Committee to serve in a broad range of matters pertaining to the identification, analysis and licensing of candidate Intellectual Properties, as well as for ongoing guidance in the development of our Portfolio Companies. Trinity Group LimitedBillie J. Ellis, Jr. practices law with Locke, Lord, Bissell & Liddell LLP, and is the head of that firm’s Global Investment Section. Mr. Ellis joined the Advisory Board of The University Funds in September 2008, and provides outside counsel to the organization. His practice covers a broad spectrum of private equity, financial, commercial, and real estate transactions, including the acquisition, financing, development, and sale of all types of properties and companies. Mr. Ellis represents some of the world’s leading private equity funds who have investment capital under management exceeding $100 billion. Mr. Ellis received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center; an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University - Beta Gamma Sigma; B.A. in History, with high honors from The University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of; Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Phi, Phi Alpha Theta, Pi Sigma Alpha; and a member of the Texas Bar.
Billie J. Ellis, Jr.Tom Virgin is currently the Chief Financial Officer for HipCricket, Inc., a mobile marketing and technology company. He has a wealth of knowledge accrued from financial management in large and small company environments. Prior to HipCricket, Mr. Virgin Mr. Virgin was Executive Vice President and CFO for Talyst Inc. In 2007, Mr. Virgin was the recipient of the Puget Sound Business Journal CFO of the Year Award, Small Private Company Category. He previously served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of T&W Financial Corp, a commercial leasing company. In that role, Mr. Virgin was responsible for financial management, including debt and equity financing, and investor relations. From 1983 through 1999, Mr. Virgin held various positions with Seafirst Bank (now Bank of America), including serving as Senior Vice President and Controller. Mr. Virgin is a CPA and holds a B.A. in Business with an emphasis in accounting and an Executive M.B.A. from the University of Washington. He is a member of Financial Executives International, The American Institute of CPAs and the Washington Society of CPAs.
Tom VirginDavid Boutcher is a partner in Reed Smith’s European and Middle East Corporate Group and has wide experience in all areas of mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and joint ventures. He serves as legal counsel for The University Funds in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. He has a background representing overseas clients on a variety of inward investments to the UK. Smith Reed represents many of the world’s leading companies in complex litigation and other high-stakes disputes, cross-border and other strategic transactions, and crucial regulatory matters. With lawyers from coast-to-coast in the United States, as well as in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Reed Smith counsels 28 of the top 30 U.S. banks and 10 of the world's 12 largest pharmaceutical companies.
David BoutcherLynda M. Applegate is the Martin Marshall Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, teaching and serving as Chair of the school's Entrepreneurial Management unit. In addition to her academic positions, Lynda worked at Ford Motor Company in the 1960s and held management positions in the health care industry during the 1970s. Ms. Applegate is an active international consultant and has served on the board of directors of both public and venture-backed companies. She is an advisor and advisory board member for senior executives launching new business initiatives in established companies and for entrepreneurs launching independent ventures. She serves on the board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Technology Council and has served as a member of the Industry Advisory Board for NASDAQ
Lynda M. ApplegateNorm Johnston is President & CEO of McMaster Energy Enterprises of Perrysburg, Ohio, which includes Solar Fields, LLC, Solar Cells Investors LLC., and Hydrogentech LLC. Mr. Johnston has been one of the primary forces in transforming northwest Ohio from its “Rust Belt” roots to a potential “Green Belt” powerhouse. He is an area leader in developing alternative energy initiatives. In 2003, Mr. Johnston collaborated with industry leaders to form the Northwest Ohio Alternative Energy Business Council, which later became Ohio Advanced Energy (OAE), which currently has over 40 Ohio companies as members. As part of his support for local production, Mr. Johnston helped create Solar Fields, a solar cell factory and R&D center in Toledo. He has been Director of R&D, as well as Director of Strategic Planning for Owens Corning. He served for 7 years as VP of Technology for Pilkington and General Manager (President) of Pilkington’s (Nippon Sheet Glass) flat glass or building materials business. Mr. Johnston also previously worked in product and marketing development with Union Carbide.
Norm JohnstonMark Calvert brings extensive experience in strategic operations and financial planning, finance, accounting and capital development, including preparing for and completing successful IPO’s. He is a CPA and CTP (Certified Turnaround Professional) with deep expertise in corporate and IP due diligence and integrations of acquisitions, complex budgeting methodologies, corporate valuations, division valuations, and compensation studies.
Mark CalvertPaul Abrams holds both a JD and MD, and is the Inventor on 12 U.S. patents. He has helped launch multiple start-up companies. He has served as President & CEO of two bio-technology companies; NeoRx Corporation and CEPTY. Mr. Abrams also served as Chairman of the Board for both Aptein, a biotechnology company which was sold to Cambridge Antibody LTD, and for Global Biosciences, an environmental remediation company. He is a prolific blogger on the Huffington Post and a member of the WBP advisory board. He has also been on the Executive Committee of BIO, the industry trade organization. Mr. Abrams is co-editor of two books on cancer and author of more than 60 publications. He holds a BA in Political Science and Economics, and doctorate degrees in Medicine and in Law from Yale University.
Paul AbramsDon Tilton Ph.D. leads our Scientific Advisory Committee. His previous commercialization experiences include founding Isothermal Systems Research, Inc. (better known as ISR/Spraycool) in 1988. He also currently serves as the Innovation Partnership Zone administrator and assists in coordinating collaborative research initiatives with the zone partners including Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Under this program, Dr. Tilton is establishing a clean technology research center of excellence that includes a small business incubator. He is widely published and is a named inventor on more than 17 issued U.S. Patents. He also often participates as a conference or panel speaker at industry events. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University.
Don Tilton Ph.D.Pete Parsons was the Studio Manager at Bungie 2002 - 2006, as well as the executive producer of Halo 2. Essentially, his job is to supervise the team and making sure that their job is smooth and nothing will happen to hinder them in the production of the Halo game. Parsons, 38, left a senior marketing job at Microsoft to join the Halo crew as studio manager. "I'd been a Bungie fan for a long time," he says. "They're an incredibly talented group of people who don't accept second best. I like the bar being set so high that falling off would kill you." He is currently working on a non-Halo project within Microsoft.
Pete ParsonsDavid Moore served 17 years as Microsoft Director of Development of the Worldwide Product Group, and more recently served 9 years as Senior Director at Vulcan, Inc. (Paul Allen’s venture capital firm). Mr. Moore is a dynamic leader with genuine knowledge about effective product development and business management. He has held several roles as lead product development and marketing strategy for advanced internet information technology firms. Mr. Moore currently is Principal of Holly Hill Corporation, which executes technical, management and marketing due diligence on investments for venture capital firms, entrepreneurial startups and private investors. His primary areas of emphasis are next generation web, clean tech, and environmentally sustainable technologies. He holds a BS in Mathematics and a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Washington.
David MooreNathan McDonald assists management with fundraising efforts and advises on investor relations. He has dedicated much of his career to stimulating early-stage capital investment, and as co-founder of the Northwest Region of the Keiretsu Forum angel investment network in 2005, was instrumental in growing that organization to the largest early-stage investor network on the west coast, adding over 235 investor members in four years. Key to that growth was the successful opening of Keiretsu Forum chapters in Seattle, Bellevue, Boise and Portland. Mr. McDonald’s leadership and personal networking skills were important contributors to the organization facilitating more than $36 million in funding for 75 companies over the course of four years. Mr. McDonald holds a BA in Business Administration & Finance from the University of Washington.
